Former India cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh, has sparked a debate over Arjun Tendulkar’s potential, claiming that the Mumbai Indians all-rounder is being wasted as a bowler.
Arjun, son of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, made his IPL debut in 2023, picking up three wickets in four matches. However, his performances have not matched the high expectations. After going wicketless in IPL 2024, the five-time champions MI still showed faith in him, buying him at his base price of ₹30 lakhs in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Yograj Singh: “Arjun Should Focus on Batting”
In an interview with former IPL player Taruwar Kohli, Yograj Singh expressed his frustration over Arjun being used as a bowler instead of a batter.
“If Arjun Tendulkar comes to me now, I will make him the world’s greatest batter in six months. No one knows the potential he has with the bat. He was with me for 12 days, and he scored a century on his Ranji Trophy debut. Did anybody realize?”
Yograj’s Training with Arjun Tendulkar
Yograj revealed that Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh asked him to train Arjun for a brief period. During this time, Arjun scored a century on his Ranji Trophy debut for Goa against Rajasthan in 2022.
“Goa’s team was here. Sachin and Yuvraj told me to take Arjun under my wings. He stayed with me for 10-12 days. I thought, ‘He is such a great batter, why are you wasting him in bowling?’ As a batting all-rounder, he will be fine.”
Why Did Arjun Stop Training Under Yograj?
Yograj Singh also made a bold claim, suggesting that Arjun’s association with him was cut off due to external pressure.
“When he scored a hundred on debut and returned to IPL, people were afraid. What if Arjun’s name gets stuck with me? Do you understand what I mean? People don’t want a tag behind their name.”
The veteran cricketer even stated that he asked Yuvraj to tell Sachin to let Arjun train under him for a year to develop his batting skills.
“I told Yuvi – tell Sachin to leave him with me for a year and see what happens.”
Arjun Tendulkar’s Future in IPL
Since making his IPL debut in 2023, Arjun has played five matches, taking three wickets. However, he is yet to make a big impact with either bat or ball.
With IPL 2025 approaching, it remains to be seen whether Mumbai Indians will give Arjun a bigger role in the playing XI, or if his potential as a batter will remain untapped.
