The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 kicked off on February 19 in Karachi’s National Stadium, marking Pakistan’s return as an ICC tournament host after nearly three decades. However, former England captain Michael Vaughan was left puzzled by the sparse attendance for the opening match between Pakistan and New Zealand.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Vaughan expressed his surprise, writing:
“Great to see the Champions Trophy being played in Pakistan .. First major event since 1996 .. Have they forgotten to tell the locals it’s on .. Where is the crowd??”

Pakistan Hosts Its First ICC Event Since 1996
This edition of the eight-team tournament features two groups, with the top two teams from each progressing to the semifinals. The final is set for March 9, with Dubai designated as the venue if India qualifies, and Lahore hosting it otherwise.
Group A: 🇵🇰 Pakistan, 🇳🇿 New Zealand, 🇧🇩 Bangladesh, 🇮🇳 India
Group B: 🏴☠️ England, 🇿🇦 South Africa, 🇦🇺 Australia, 🇦🇫 Afghanistan
As defending champions, Pakistan is aiming to retain the title they won in 2017 by defeating arch-rivals India in the final.
Low Turnout for a Historic Occasion
The Champions Trophy opener between Pakistan and New Zealand was expected to draw large home support, given Pakistan’s return as an ICC event host. However, empty stands in Karachi were a stark contrast to expectations.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had ensured extensive security measures and logistics, including deploying 12,000 police officers and organizing chartered flights for teams. However, the lack of significant crowd presence has raised questions about match promotion and fan engagement.
New Zealand’s Edge Over Pakistan in Champions Trophy History
Despite the low turnout, New Zealand carried historical momentum into the match, having defeated Pakistan in all three of their previous Champions Trophy encounters in 2000, 2006, and 2009.
With the India vs Pakistan clash in Dubai on February 23 expected to be a highly anticipated showdown, it remains to be seen whether Pakistan’s home matches will see an improved crowd presence in the coming days.
