Sunrisers Hyderabad owner acquire Northern Superchargers franchise in The Hundred

The owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have expanded their global cricket footprint by acquiring stakes in Northern Superchargers, a franchise in England’s The Hundred tournament. The deal, worth GBP 100 million, saw SRH outbid two other contenders, further highlighting the growing influence of IPL franchises in England’s 100-ball competition.

With this acquisition, Northern Superchargers becomes the sixth team in The Hundred to transition into private ownership, as the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) continues to seek external investments to globalize and strengthen the league.

SRH Joins IPL Giants in The Hundred’s Expansion

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s entry into The Hundred follows the footsteps of other IPL franchise owners, who have recently invested in the tournament:

  • Mumbai Indians (MI) acquired stakes in Oval Invincibles
  • Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) invested in Manchester Originals

The Chennai-based Sun Group, which owns SRH, now adds another major franchise to its portfolio, strengthening its presence in global T20 leagues. They already own Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the defending SA20 champions in South Africa.

The Hundred’s Shift to Private Ownership

With this deal, six out of the eight teams in The Hundred have now moved to private ownership:

London Spirit
Oval Invincibles (Mumbai Indians)
Welsh Fire
Manchester Originals (Lucknow Super Giants)
Birmingham Phoenix
Northern Superchargers (Sunrisers Hyderabad)

The only remaining ECB-controlled teams are Trent Rockets and Southern Brave, but they too are expected to be sold soon.

What This Means for The Hundred

With IPL owners now playing a significant role in The Hundred, the league could see a surge in popularity, talent-sharing, and commercial growth, setting the stage for an exciting new era in franchise cricket.
