Shubman Gill, India’s vice-captain, showcased his class with a stunning century in Punjab’s second innings during their Ranji Trophy Round 6 match against Karnataka at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Leading his side in the absence of senior players, Gill’s knock was a glimmer of hope in an otherwise disappointing outing for Punjab, as they suffered a crushing defeat by an innings and 207 runs on Day 3.

Gill on His Red-Ball Struggles
After a lean patch in recent red-ball matches, including the New Zealand series and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Gill’s century marked a much-needed return to form. However, the opener candidly spoke about the challenges he faces in the longer format, admitting that he sometimes struggles with maintaining focus and composure.
“Red-ball batting is a concern. Sometimes, I think with the red ball, in the matches that I play, I get very good 25-30 runs. I think in those moments, I put too much pressure on myself to be able to score big runs,” Gill said, as quoted by NDTV.
He emphasized how this mindset disrupts his natural flow:
“There is a certain zone that I am in, a certain intent, and sometimes I lose that because I put too much pressure on myself that I have to get a big run now that I am set. In those crucial moments, I sometimes lose my focus and concentration.”
Gill also highlighted the importance of staying involved in the game, explaining how it helps him bring out his best:
“I like to be involved in the game and what is happening. I think it brings out the best in me as a player when I am constantly involved.”
A Lone Bright Spot Amidst Punjab’s Collapse
While Gill’s century stood out, Punjab struggled overall, especially in the first innings, where they conceded a massive deficit. Karnataka, fresh off their Vijay Hazare Trophy triumph, dominated the game with left-handed batter R. Smaran scoring a brilliant 203 off 277 deliveries.
Smaran’s double ton, supported by a disciplined bowling attack, ensured that Karnataka registered an emphatic victory. Smaran was deservingly named the Player of the Match for his sensational innings.
Gill’s Path Ahead
For Shubman Gill, this century could be the start of a turnaround in his red-ball career. Known for his ability to adapt across formats, the young batter has a promising future in the Test setup. His honesty about his struggles reflects his hunger to improve and solidify his position as one of India’s premier batters in all formats.
With important international assignments ahead, including the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and a challenging Test calendar, Gill’s ability to convert starts into big scores will be key to India’s success.
