The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is gearing up for its third season, set to commence in February 2025, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly shortlisted Lucknow and Baroda as the venues for the tournament. Two-Phase Format for WPL 2025
The upcoming WPL season is expected to feature 23 matches, including knockout games and the final. As per reports, Baroda is being considered to host the second phase of the tournament, including the grand finale.
Baroda’s Kotambi Stadium, which was recently inaugurated, has been a strong contender due to its state-of-the-art facilities. The stadium, which hosted India Women’s ODIs against the West Indies and several domestic matches like Ranji Trophy games, has already gained a reputation for hosting high-profile cricket events. To ensure it meets the required standards, the Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) is preparing by hosting the knockout stages of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy under lights.
Lucknow, on the other hand, is being considered for the first phase of the tournament. The BCCI has reportedly initiated informal discussions with the Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) to finalize arrangements.
Evolution of WPL Hosting
The inaugural WPL season in 2023 was held entirely in Mumbai, while Bengaluru and Delhi shared hosting duties for the second season in 2024. With this new format of splitting matches across two cities, the BCCI aims to expand the league’s reach and showcase top-tier cricket in more venues across India.
Defending Champions and Upcoming Challenges
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who clinched the WPL title last year, are eager to defend their crown. Fans will also be keeping an eye on Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, whose fitness has been a concern. She has been called to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, reportedly for a fitness check-up, after being rested from the ongoing ODI series against Ireland. Meanwhile, bowler Renuka Singh Thakur has also been rested.
Anticipation Builds for February 2025
With the WPL scheduled to kick off in early February and conclude by March 8 or 9, excitement is building among cricket enthusiasts. As the BCCI works to finalize venues and schedules, the inclusion of Baroda and Lucknow highlights their commitment to growing women’s cricket across India.
