Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah laid the foundation stone for a new international cricket stadium in Tumakuru, approximately 70 kilometers from Bengaluru, on December 2. This marks a significant development for cricket infrastructure in Karnataka, as Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium has been the sole venue for hosting international cricket matches in the state.
The stadium will be constructed on 50 acres of land allocated to the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). The Chief Minister emphasized the stadium’s potential to boost Tumakuru’s economy and enhance sports development in the region.
“We have given 50 acres of land to Karnataka State Cricket Association for the construction of an international cricket stadium. This will complement the economic growth and sports progress of the Tumakuru district. I have instructed them to complete the stadium’s construction as soon as possible and fulfill the expectations of the cricket lovers,” Siddaramaiah posted on his X handle.

Proposed Cricket Stadium in Mysuru
In addition to Tumakuru, the Karnataka government has also proposed the construction of an international cricket stadium near Mysuru. Earlier this year, the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) handed over 20.8 acres of land to the KSCA for this purpose.
The Chief Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting cricket in Mysuru:
“We will provide land in Mysuru too,” he said, addressing the KSCA’s request for land allocation in the region.
BCCI’s Plan for Tier-Two Cities
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shown interest in expanding the reach of cricket by hosting IPL matches in tier-two cities across Karnataka. In addition to Bengaluru, venues in Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, and Belagavi are being considered for future IPL matches, catering to cricket fans in smaller towns.
India’s Dominance in Cricket Infrastructure
India boasts 54 international cricket stadiums, the highest number globally. For comparison:
- Australia and England: 23 stadiums each
- Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium: With a seating capacity of 40,000, it remains one of India’s iconic venues, though smaller than many international stadiums.
The construction of new international stadiums in Tumakuru and Mysuru reflects Karnataka’s commitment to enhancing its sports infrastructure and further promoting cricket in the state.
