Former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo has lashed out at the West Indies Cricket Board for their controversial decision to replace Rovman Powell as T20I captain with Shai Hope. Bravo expressed his disappointment on social media, calling the move an injustice and one of the worst decisions in West Indies cricket history.
Powell had been instrumental in the team’s resurgence in T20 cricket, leading them to series victories against India, England, and South Africa. Under his leadership, West Indies also progressed to the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and climbed from ninth to fifth in the ICC T20I rankings.
Bravo, a former all-rounder and T20 World Cup winner, took to Instagram to voice his frustration, stating:
“@windiescricket once again you guys prove to the people of the Caribbean and the cricket world that the injustices towards players continues!
As a former player and a fan of WI cricket, this is easily one of the worst decisions ever. @ravipowell52 took over captaincy when our T20 team was in 9th spot and was able to move up to 3rd in the rankings, and this is how you repay him? When will the bad treatment towards players stop?
This is so sad on all levels… make it make sense! SMH #JusticeForRP”
Bravo’s criticism has ignited debates among West Indies cricket fans, with many questioning the reasoning behind Powell’s removal.
Leadership Overhaul in West Indies Cricket
Apart from the T20I captaincy change, West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite has also stepped down. A new captain for the longest format will be named in the coming weeks.
Brathwaite led West Indies to historic victories, including their first Test win in Australia in 27 years (Brisbane, 2024) and a landmark victory over Pakistan in Pakistan—their first in 34 years.
With these major leadership changes, West Indies cricket enters a new era, but Bravo’s strong words suggest not everyone is on board with the decisions being made.
