The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have roped in Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel as a replacement for Vansh Bedi for the remainder of IPL 2025. Bedi, a 22-year-old gloveman from Delhi, has been ruled out due to a ligament tear in his left ankle, having not featured in a single match this season.
Patel, 26, brings firepower and experience to the squad. The right-handed batter has featured in 47 T20 matches, amassing 1162 runs at a blazing strike rate of 170.38, including two centuries and four fifties. One of his most memorable innings came during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he smashed a 28-ball hundred – the joint-fastest T20 century by an Indian – against Tripura.
Official IPL Statement
In a statement, the IPL confirmed the replacement:
“Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has signed Urvil Patel as a replacement for Vansh Bedi, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament owing to a ligament tear in the left ankle. Urvil was a part of the Gujarat Titans in 2023 and will join CSK for his base price of INR 30 Lakh.”
Though Patel was previously part of the Gujarat Titans, he didn’t get a chance to debut in the IPL. Now with CSK, he could finally earn his opportunity on the big stage, especially as the franchise continues to test emerging talent following their elimination from the IPL 2025 playoffs.

CSK Looking Ahead
With nothing to lose this season, CSK has been actively trying out fresh faces including Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Sheikh Rasheed. Urvil Patel’s signing aligns with this youth-centric approach.
Coach Stephen Fleming reflected on the season’s struggles but remained optimistic about CSK’s future direction:
“We’re unearthing talent and building evidence for a strong team next year. While it feels like doom and gloom, there have been some bright sparks.”
While the five-time IPL champions may be out of playoff contention this year, their focus is clearly on rebuilding and regrouping for IPL 2026 — and Urvil Patel may just be one of the key names in that process.
