In a bizarre accident, commentator Mark Howard was hospitalized on Wednesday after being injured by a flying bail during a promo shoot ahead of the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Adelaide Oval.
The incident occurred during a bowling challenge featuring former Australian fast bowler Brett Lee, with Howard standing behind the stumps in a wicketkeeper’s position. Lee delivered a perfect ball that struck the stumps, dislodging the bails. One of the bails ricocheted at high speed and struck Howard on the head, leaving him bleeding.
“We were shooting and I was involved in a bowling challenge. I bowled a ball that hit the stumps, but I heard two noises,” Lee told News Corp.
“I haven’t seen a bail travelling that fast before. It was a once-in-a-million chance that a bail would hit someone. I think the bail hit him first before he caught the ball.”

Howard Rushed to Hospital
Howard was immediately taken to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he received stitches. Despite the injury, Howard has assured fans and colleagues that he will fulfill his broadcasting duties for the second Test, albeit remotely for now.
“He will be there in the second Test. He is still in the hospital but is carrying out his duties from that place,” said Lee, who expressed concern and relief that the injury was not more severe.
Howard, who is a popular face in the cricketing world, shared his gratitude that the injury narrowly missed his eyes.
“Lee was concerned, and I am happy that I managed to avoid an eye injury,” Howard remarked, acknowledging the potential impact on his television career if the injury had been more severe.
A Reminder of Cricket’s Unpredictability
The incident underscores the unpredictable nature of cricket, even off the field. While accidents involving players on the pitch are not uncommon, this rare injury to a commentator highlights the risks that can arise in the game’s promotional and entertainment aspects.
Howard is expected to resume full-time broadcasting duties once fully recovered. Meanwhile, the cricketing fraternity and fans have sent their well-wishes for his swift recovery.
