Big BCCI Contract Revamp: Kohli & Rohit to be Demoted, Abhishek & Nitish Join the List

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to make significant changes in the annual central contracts for the men’s team, with Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja likely to be demoted from the highest A+ category. Meanwhile, emerging talents like Nitish Reddy, Abhishek Sharma, and Harshit Rana are set to receive their first-ever C category contracts.

Why Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja Could Be Demoted?

Currently, Kohli, Rohit, and Jadeja hold A+ contracts, a category generally reserved for players featuring in all three formats. However, since all three have retired from T20Is, reports suggest they might be moved to A category, which is for players active in at least two formats.

Additionally, there are doubts over Kohli and Rohit’s future in Test cricket. According to Dainik Jagran, top BCCI officials have hinted at reconsidering their contracts as their long-term red-ball future remains uncertain.

Bumrah Likely to Retain A+ Contract; Gill & Jaiswal in Line for Promotion

Amid these changes, Jasprit Bumrah appears to be the only player who is certain to retain his A+ contract. Meanwhile, ODI vice-captain Shubman Gill (previously in the A category) could be promoted to A+, while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Axar Patel are also likely to be moved up from B to A category.

New Faces in Central Contracts: Nitish Reddy, Abhishek Sharma & Harshit Rana

Several youngsters are expected to earn their maiden BCCI contracts under the C category, which requires a player to have played at least 3 Tests, 8 ODIs, or 10 T20Is in the contract period.

  • Nitish Kumar Reddy
  • Abhishek Sharma
  • Harshit Rana

On the other hand, Ruturaj Gaikwad could lose his C category contract, as he has not featured in an international match since July 2024.

BCCI Selection Meeting on March 29

A key meeting on March 29 in Guwahati—featuring chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia—will finalize the central contracts along with India’s Test squad for the upcoming England tour in June after IPL 2025.

With contract renewals expected soon, all eyes will be on how BCCI handles the futures of its biggest superstars and whether young talents get the recognition they deserve.
