Fresh off their maiden BBL title win in January, the Hobart Hurricanes are set to represent Australia at the Global Super League (GSL) in Guyana this July. The invitation comes as a significant nod to their recent success, making them the second Australian side to join the tournament after Cricket Victoria, who were runners-up last year.
The GSL, now scheduled for a July window, presents a prime opportunity for the Hurricanes to field a strong squad—though a potential scheduling conflict looms. The tournament overlaps with Australia’s Test tour of the Caribbean and a five-match T20I series against the West Indies. Despite this, Cricket Tasmania remains optimistic about sending a competitive team.
Key Hurricanes players like Beau Webster, Riley Meredith, Nathan Ellis, and Tim David are in consideration. However, their availability remains uncertain due to international commitments. Webster could be in the Test squad, while Ellis and David are likely candidates for the T20Is. Ellis’ central contract may limit his GSL participation due to workload management. David, meanwhile, hasn’t re-signed with the Hurricanes yet and may be eligible to play for the GSL champions Rangpur Riders, having previously featured for them in the BPL.
Cricket Tasmania is in talks with Cricket Australia to clarify player availability, especially for Ellis and David. There’s also a possibility that the tournament may be pushed to February—potentially clashing with Australia’s domestic season—which could complicate things further. Last year, Perth Scorchers declined a GSL invite due to a December clash.
Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins praised last year’s GSL:
“It was amazing. We were really impressed with how they ran the tournament, the quality of the cricket, and the wickets. I’ve long supported bringing back a Champions League-style event, and the GSL is the closest thing to it right now,” he told ESPNcricinfo.
As excitement builds, fans are eager to see how the Hurricanes navigate this opportunity and whether GSL could mark the return of a global club competition in T20 cricket.
