Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) shook things up on Tuesday, announcing their squad for the upcoming T20I series against India. Charith Asalanka takes the reins as captain, replacing Wanindu Hasaranga who stepped down earlier this month.
Asalanka Takes Charge
The 24-year-old Asalanka brings a youthful energy to the captaincy role. This series marks Sri Lanka’s first assignment since a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign. Asalanka will be keen to prove his leadership mettle against a formidable Indian side led by Shubman Gill.
Veterans and Newcomers in the Mix
The 16-member squad features a blend of experience and fresh faces. Established names like Kusal Janith Perera and Dinesh Chandimal find a place alongside exciting youngsters. Notably, seasoned campaigners Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva miss out on selection. The reasons behind the exclusion of Sadeera Samarawickrama and Dilshan Madhushanka remain unclear.
Full Focus on India
Sri Lanka will be looking to bounce back after a forgettable World Cup showing. India, on the other hand, come into the series after a successful outing in Zimbabwe. The three-match T20I showdown will be played entirely at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, commencing on July 27th.
