Incident Details
The incident occurred during the 11th over of Zimbabwe’s innings when Naib showed visible frustration after his LBW appeal against Tashinga Musekiwa was turned down by the umpire. The former Afghan captain mockingly performed a prayer gesture and sarcastically requested a review, despite the DRS not being available for the match.
Sanctions Imposed
- Fine: Naib was fined 15% of his match fee.
- Demerit Point: A single demerit point was added to his disciplinary record, marking his first offence within a 24-month period.
Naib admitted to the breach and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Andy Pycroft, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.
Afghanistan Levels Series
Despite the controversy, Afghanistan secured a commanding 50-run victory to level the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Naib contributed with the bat, remaining unbeaten on 28 runs off 21 balls, while Darwish Rasooli’s impressive 58-run knock and Rashid Khan’s three wickets highlighted Afghanistan’s performance.
Rashid Khan Praises Rasooli
At the post-match presentation, Afghanistan skipper Rashid Khan praised Rasooli for stepping up at the crucial No. 4 position:
“The way Darwish Rasooli came and played was really impressive. That No. 4 position has been a struggle for us, but his performance gives us hope heading into future tournaments, including the next World Cup.”
Rashid also emphasized the importance of adapting to the conditions at Harare, noting the challenges posed by the large ground dimensions and the need for proper cricketing shots.
Decider Awaits
With the series now tied 1-1, the decisive third T20I is set to be played on Saturday, December 14, at the Harare Sports Club. All eyes will be on both teams as they battle for the series win.
