The announcement of India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has sparked a debate among fans and experts. Among the notable exclusions, wrist-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal’s absence has drawn significant attention, with former cricketer Aakash Chopra accusing the BCCI and team management of prematurely ending Chahal’s international career.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra expressed disappointment over the treatment meted out to Chahal, who last played an ODI for India in January 2023. “Yuzvendra Chahal has been totally finished. His file has been closed. I have no idea why they did that,” said Chopra.

Strong ODI Record Ignored
Chahal’s ODI career statistics paint the picture of a reliable performer, with 121 wickets in 72 matches at an average of 27.13. Despite these impressive numbers, Chahal hasn’t featured in India’s plans for nearly two years, leaving fans and analysts puzzled.
“His numbers are very good. He has picked up a lot of wickets and was consistently doing well. Yet, he has been sidelined without explanation,” Chopra added.
Chahal’s exclusion from the 2024/25 Vijay Hazare Trophy further solidified his position outside the reckoning for the Champions Trophy squad. Chopra lamented that the prolonged absence made it impossible to consider Chahal for a comeback, as his selection now would appear “regressive.”
Spin-Bowling Choices for Champions Trophy
India’s Champions Trophy squad features three spin-bowling all-rounders – Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar. Kuldeep Yadav is the only specialist spinner in the 15-member squad, highlighting the team’s preference for versatility.
Chopra questioned the strategy of sidelining a proven wicket-taker like Chahal, especially when spin will likely play a crucial role in the Dubai leg of the tournament.
Champions Trophy and England Series
India will kick off their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Before that, they will play a three-match ODI series against England starting February 2 in Nagpur. This series will serve as a final preparation for the Men in Blue ahead of the ICC tournament.

The omission of Chahal, a fan favorite, has reignited conversations about transparency and consistency in team selection. While India boasts a strong spin department, many believe that Chahal’s experience and wicket-taking ability could have been invaluable in high-pressure matches.
For now, it seems Yuzvendra Chahal’s international career remains in limbo, with no clear path for his return. Whether the decision proves to be a strategic masterstroke or a missed opportunity remains to be seen.
