Why Only My Son?’ – Washington Sundar’s Father Explodes Over Selectors’ Bias After Century Heroics!

Washington Sundar may have let his bat do the talking with a stunning unbeaten century at Old Trafford, but it was his father who delivered the knockout blow — slamming selectors and team management for years of inconsistent treatment.
Despite making his international debut back in 2017, the 25-year-old all-rounder has been in and out of the Indian team, particularly in Test cricket. Since finally getting his Test cap in 2021 under extraordinary circumstances, Sundar has played just 11 Tests. And yet, his numbers speak volumes: an impressive batting average of 44.86 and bowling average of 27.87 — numbers many seasoned Test players would envy.
But for M Sundar, Washington’s father, the frustration isn’t just about stats. It’s about fairness.
“Washington has been doing very well consistently. However, people tend to avoid and forget his performances. Other players get regular chances, only my son doesn’t get them,” he told The Times of India in a scathing attack on the national selectors.
His comments came shortly after Washington scored his maiden Test century — a gritty 101* — helping India salvage a historic draw against England at Old Trafford. Instead of celebrating his son’s achievement, M Sundar took the moment to highlight a glaring issue he believes has plagued Washington’s career.
“Washington should consistently bat at number five like he did in the fourth Test and get five to ten straight chances. He was not even picked for the first Test against England. How is that justified?”
The senior Sundar also pointed out past instances where his son was axed despite strong performances. He recalled how in 2021, Washington scored an unbeaten 96 against England on a challenging Ahmedabad surface, after smashing 85* on a rank turner in Chennai. Yet, he was dropped soon after and didn’t return to the Test setup until 2024.
The frustration doesn’t stop at international cricket. Sundar’s father even called out his IPL franchise, Gujarat Titans, for failing to back him consistently.
“Even GT don’t give him regular chances. He showed what he can do in the 2025 IPL Eliminator against MI — 48 off 24 balls, but that wasn’t enough. Players like Yashasvi Jaiswal have been backed over and over. Why not my son?”
M Sundar’s strong words have reignited debate among fans and experts about how talent is handled in Indian cricket. Is Washington Sundar being overlooked in a crowded field, or is he a classic case of a performer lost in the system?
One thing’s clear — his father isn’t staying silent anymore, and with Washington’s bat speaking louder than ever, the selectors may soon run out of excuses.
