West Indies Allow Players to Continue in IPL 2025 Despite International Series

In a move that comes as a major relief to several IPL franchises, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has decided to allow its players to continue playing in the remainder of IPL 2025, despite the overlap with their upcoming international commitments. This decision particularly benefits playoff-contending teams like Gujarat Titans (GT) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who were set to lose key performers like Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd.
Rutherford has been a vital cog for Gujarat Titans, scoring 299 runs in 11 matches at an average of 38 and a strike rate of 159. Often used as an Impact Player, his presence adds depth to GT’s middle order. Romario Shepherd, meanwhile, made a big impact in a single outing for RCB, smashing an unbeaten 53 at a phenomenal strike rate of 378, showcasing his value as a finisher.
CWI, in a formal statement, acknowledged the scheduling clash with the ODI tours to Ireland (May 21, 23, 25) and England (May 29, June 1, 3) but assured fans that they remain confident in the depth of their talent pool. “This is an exceptional and unforeseen situation, but we will continue to field a strong and competitive squad,” the statement read.
While players like Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Nicholas Pooran, and Shimron Hetmyer are not part of the West Indies squad for the upcoming series, the three players named for the ODIs — Rutherford, Shepherd, and Shamar Joseph — had their availability discussed individually.
CWI confirmed that:
- Shamar Joseph will not return to IPL 2025 and will be available for the Ireland and England series.
- Sherfane Rutherford will be replaced by John Campbell for the Ireland leg, but may be available for later matches.
- Romario Shepherd will be replaced by Jediah Blades.
- Shimron Hetmyer, whose team Rajasthan Royals is already out of playoff contention, will join the squad for the England leg.
The West Indies board emphasized coordination with BCCI and IPL franchises, saying, “The safety and well-being of our players remain a top priority. We’re working closely with stakeholders to ensure comfort and peace of mind for all players involved.”
The three-match ODI series in Ireland and England will be followed by a T20I series starting June 6, after the IPL 2025 final on June 3, allowing a clean transition for most players.
