Rizwan Reflects on the Defeat
Speaking after the match, Rizwan acknowledged both positives and areas of concern:
“We started well in the chase with good intent but lost momentum in critical overs. Our bowlers were fantastic early on, but Chapman’s knock shifted the game. We need to improve on capitalizing on key chances.”
He also highlighted the introduction of debutants, calling it a valuable experience in tough New Zealand conditions.
How the Match Unfolded
Chasing 345, Pakistan began promisingly with Usman Khan (39) and Abdullah Shafique (36) forging an 83-run opening stand. However, quick breakthroughs from Nathan Smith and Michael Bracewell slowed their momentum.
A 76-run stand between Babar Azam (78) and Rizwan (30) gave Pakistan hope, followed by Salman Ali Agha’s fighting 58. But wickets kept tumbling, leading to a collapse at 271 in 44.1 overs.
For New Zealand, Smith (4/60) and Duffy (2/45) were the standout bowlers.
Chapman and Mitchell Star for New Zealand
Earlier, New Zealand recovered from 50-3 with a match-winning 199-run stand between Mark Chapman (132) and Daryl Mitchell (76). Late fireworks from debutant Muhammad Abbas (50 off 24) took the hosts to 345/8.
Despite Irfan Niazi’s 3/51, Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to contain the damage.
Looking Ahead
With two ODIs left, Pakistan must regroup quickly. Rizwan remains hopeful: “We have two more chances and will come back stronger.”
