Virat Kohli’s Struggles in 2024: Worse Than Babar Azam

India’s legendary batter Virat Kohli endured a dismal year in 2024, with performances that fell far below his usual standards. Once regarded as the cornerstone of India’s batting lineup and one of the greatest batters of his generation, Kohli’s prolonged slump in form has been a major disappointment for his team and fans alike.

A Decline in Form

Kohli started 2024 with a decent 46-run knock in Cape Town during the Test series against South Africa. However, this bright moment quickly faded as a string of low scores followed. Apart from a gritty 70 against New Zealand and a lone century at Perth Stadium during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), Kohli’s year was marred by inconsistency and failure to deliver when it mattered most.

Ending the year with just 655 runs at an average of 21.83, Kohli’s statistics were worse than all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, reflecting the depths of his slump.

Out of the Top 50 Batters of 2024

Kohli’s prolonged struggles also saw him miss out on a place among the top 50 run-scorers in 2024. Sri Lanka’s Dinesh Chandimal, ranked 50th, scored 724 runs at an average of 42.58, a stark contrast to Kohli’s numbers.

Even Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who faced his own challenges in Tests, outperformed Kohli. Babar finished with 1168 runs at an average of 32.44, including nine half-centuries. In comparison, Kohli managed just three fifty-plus scores, further tarnishing his stature in international cricket.

Is the Sydney Test Kohli’s Last Chance in the Format?

Kohli’s struggles in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy have been particularly glaring. Australia’s bowlers have exploited his weakness outside the off-stump, consistently dismissing him cheaply and putting India on the back foot.

As the Sydney Test looms, pressure mounts on Kohli to rediscover his form. Failing to deliver could see the selectors re-evaluate his role in India’s Test side, especially with younger talents waiting in the wings.

A Critical Crossroads for Kohli

While Kohli’s genius and past brilliance are unquestionable, 2024 has highlighted a career at a crossroads. Whether the SCG Test will mark a resurgence or potentially his final act in the format remains to be seen. For now, the “King” must fight to retain his crown.
