Virat Kohli Reveals Why He Gave Up RCB Captaincy

In a heartfelt revelation on RCB’s podcast with Mayanti Langer, Virat Kohli opened up about the emotional and mental toll of leadership, explaining why he stepped down as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain after a near-decade at the helm.

Kohli, who led RCB in 140 IPL matches with 68 wins and 71 losses, admitted that the intense scrutiny and constant pressure eventually became too much. “From 2016 to 2019, I kept getting suggestions to take a break or shift focus. But it wasn’t easy—there was too much happening,” Kohli said.

Having captained India across all formats for nearly eight years and RCB for nine, Kohli revealed that the dual burden affected his mental space. “Every time I walked out to bat, there were expectations. I never had the sense that the attention was off me. I was constantly exposed, 24×7, and it got really tough.”

Eventually, Kohli said he had to choose between continuing under immense pressure or rediscovering the joy of cricket. “I wanted to be in a space where I could just play without being judged. I needed to be happy.”

When asked if he ever considered leaving RCB, Kohli admitted the thought crossed his mind. “I wouldn’t say I was tempted, but I did think about it. I questioned whether I wanted to figure out life all over again in a new setup.”

However, his deep bond with the franchise prevailed. “The relationship I have with RCB is more valuable. The mutual respect built over the years… That matters more than trophies. This is my home. Whether we win or don’t, I’m going to see it through.”

After Kohli stepped down, Faf du Plessis was named RCB captain at the IPL 2022 mega auction—a transition that signaled a new era while preserving the legacy of Kohli’s commitment and passion for the team.

RCB may still be chasing their elusive maiden IPL title, but for Kohli, the journey, loyalty, and connection with the franchise stand above silverware.
