India’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 hero, Varun Chakaravarthy, has come full circle from his painful 2021 T20 World Cup experience to playing a key role in India’s latest ICC triumph.
The mystery spinner picked up 9 wickets in the tournament, including a stunning five-wicket haul in only his second ODI, helping India lift the coveted trophy. However, just a few years ago, the same venue in Dubai witnessed one of the darkest phases of his career.

“I Was in Depression”: Varun Opens Up on 2021 T20 WC Struggles
During the 2021 T20 World Cup, Chakaravarthy was billed as India’s X-factor, having impressed in the IPL. However, he failed to take a single wicket and was part of India’s infamous 10-wicket loss to Pakistan, which led to severe backlash from fans.
👉 “It was a dark time for me. I was depressed because I thought I was not able to do justice after I was picked for the World Cup with a lot of hype. I regretted not taking even one wicket. For three years, I was not selected. So, I think the comeback to the team was tougher than the path to my debut,” Varun revealed in an interview.
Received Death Threats, Advised Not to Return to India 😨
The spinner also opened up about the shocking threats he faced following India’s early exit from the tournament.
👉 “After the 2021 World Cup, I received threat calls. People said, ‘Don’t come to India. If you try, you won’t be able to.’ Some people even tracked me down to my house, and I had to hide at times. When I was returning from the airport, some people followed me on their bikes. I understand fans are emotional, but it was a tough time.”
Major Changes Led to Champions Trophy Success
Varun admitted that the 2021 setback forced him to revamp his game, leading to his redemption in the 2025 Champions Trophy.
👉 “I had to change a lot about myself. I changed my daily routine and practice. Earlier, I used to bowl 50 balls in a session—I doubled it. Without knowing if the selectors would recall me, it was difficult. After the third year, I thought it was all over. But we won the IPL, and then I got the call. I was very happy after that.”
Eyes Set on IPL 2025 With KKR

👉 “I cannot believe all good things are happening in one go. I want to take it to the next level. I have faced setbacks and know how bad criticism can be. But now, I’m happy with where I am.”
