Umesh Yadav Opens Up on IPL 2025 Snub: “Why Should I Lie? It Feels Bad”

Veteran Indian pacer Umesh Yadav has candidly shared his disappointment after going unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auction, held in November 2024. Despite a stellar IPL career spanning 148 matches and stints with four franchises—Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), and Gujarat Titans (GT)—Umesh failed to attract any bidders in this year’s auction.

A Shocking Omission

Umesh, who was picked by Gujarat Titans for ₹5.80 crore in the 2024 mini-auction, played seven matches for the franchise last season. He claimed eight wickets at an average of 26.25 but had a high economy rate of 10. Regardless of his recent form, his unsold status in the 2025 mega auction came as a shock to many, including the bowler himself.

“Everyone knows that I wasn’t selected for the IPL this year. I have been playing for 15 years. It’s very shocking for me. Why should I lie? It feels bad. After playing so much and playing close to 150 IPL matches, you don’t get selected. It’s shocking,” Umesh said in an interview with Inside Sport.

Auction Dynamics and Disappointment

The IPL 2025 mega auction saw franchises spending ₹639.15 crore over two days, with big-ticket signings such as Rishabh Pant (₹27 crore to LSG), Shreyas Iyer (₹26.75 crore to PBKS), and Venkatesh Iyer (₹23.75 crore to KKR). However, some seasoned players, including Umesh, failed to find a team.

Umesh reflected on the possible reasons for his exclusion:
“It’s upon the franchises and their strategies, or maybe my name came late in the auction, and they weren’t left with money. Regardless, something has happened. I am very frustrated and disturbed. But still, it’s okay. I can’t change anyone’s decision.”

Determined to Keep Bowling

At 37 years old, Umesh remains steadfast in his commitment to the game. After undergoing leg surgery post-IPL 2024, he is focused on delivering high-speed bowling for as long as he can.

“Till I feel I can clock 140 kmph, I will bowl. When I won’t be able to bowl, I’ll quit cricket myself. I won’t have to tell this to anyone,” he asserted.

Umesh last represented India during the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023. With 57 Tests, 75 ODIs, and nine T20Is under his belt, he has amassed 288 wickets across formats, proving his mettle as a versatile and experienced bowler.

Looking Ahead

While the IPL 2025 snub has been a bitter pill to swallow, Umesh Yadav’s determination and resilience suggest he isn’t done yet. Whether in domestic cricket or on the international stage, the veteran pacer is likely to channel his frustration into performances that remind franchises of his enduring value.
