Torrent Group acquires majority stake in Gujarat Titans for INR 5035 crore, BCCI is entitled to earn INR 375 crore

In a landmark deal ahead of IPL 2025, Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group has acquired a 67% majority stake in Gujarat Titans (GT) for INR 5035 crore. The transaction, which received the mandatory approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), marks a significant shift in GT’s ownership structure.

However, CVC Capital Partners, the original owners of the franchise, will retain a 33% minority stake, ensuring its continued association with the team.

The deal was finalized at a staggering INR 7522 crore valuation, making Gujarat Titans one of the most valuable franchises in the Indian Premier League. As per BCCI regulations, the board earns 5% from every ownership transaction, meaning BCCI will receive INR 375 crore from this acquisition.

The Torrent Group confirmed in an official release that all necessary approvals, including board approval, have been received, completing the acquisition.

“With the fulfilment of these conditions, the acquisition has now been successfully completed. As part of the transaction, Irelia, managed by funds advised by CVC, will continue to hold a substantial minority stake of 33 per cent, maintaining its association with the franchise,” the statement read.

Shubman Gill Aims to Revive GT After a Disappointing 2024 Season

Gujarat Titans, one of the newest teams in the IPL, had a sensational debut season in 2022, winning the title under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy. The team continued its strong run by reaching the final in 2023, only to fall short.

However, ahead of IPL 2024, Pandya made a controversial move back to Mumbai Indians, leaving GT in need of a new captain. The franchise appointed star batter Shubman Gill to lead the side, but his debut season as captain was far from successful.

After reaching two consecutive finals, GT failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2024, winning just five out of their 14 matches. Gill’s captaincy came under heavy criticism, with many pointing out his lack of experience as a leader.

Now, with Torrent Group stepping in as the new majority owner, GT will be hoping for a fresh start under Gill’s leadership in IPL 2025.

Gujarat Titans Set to Begin IPL 2025 Campaign on March 25

The 2025 IPL season presents an opportunity for Shubman Gill & Co. to bounce back. Gujarat Titans will kick off their campaign against Punjab Kings at their home ground, the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on March 25.

Their second fixture will be against Mumbai Indians on March 29, also at the same venue. With a strong squad and some fresh additions in the mega auction, Gujarat Titans will look to reclaim their dominance in the IPL under new ownership and fresh leadership.

Can Gill turn things around and lead GT back to the playoffs? The IPL 2025 season will be crucial for both the franchise and its newly appointed captain.
