Tanush Kotian Set to Join India Squad Ahead of MCG Test

Mumbai’s promising off-spinning all-rounder Tanush Kotian is all set to join the Indian Test squad in Australia for the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. This decision follows Ravichandran Ashwin’s announcement of retirement from international cricket at the conclusion of the third Test in Brisbane, marking the end of an illustrious career.

Kotian’s Stellar Domestic Record and Recent Form

The 26-year-old Kotian has been a consistent performer on the domestic circuit. With 33 first-class matches under his belt, he has scored 1525 runs at an impressive average of 41.21, along with 101 wickets at an average of 25.70.

His standout performance came during Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy-winning campaign (2023-24), where he played a pivotal role, amassing 502 runs at an average of 41.83 and bagging 29 wickets at 16.96. These efforts earned him the Player of the Tournament accolade and cemented his reputation as a dependable all-rounder.

Currently representing Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Kotian is expected to travel to Melbourne soon to join the Indian squad. Given his recent stint with the India A team in Australia, visa formalities are unlikely to pose any challenges.

Shami Deemed Unfit for Selection

In another development, veteran pacer Mohammed Shami’s return to the Indian Test team has been delayed further. The BCCI Medical Staff declared Shami unfit for the final two Tests of the series due to minor swelling in his left knee, attributed to his recent workload.

Shami’s recovery journey began with Bengal’s Ranji Trophy game in November and continued with his participation in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Despite bowling extensive spells without visible discomfort, the recent swelling has necessitated further rest and rehab.

The BCCI has emphasized a cautious approach, ensuring Shami’s workload is eased to prevent aggravation of the injury. His participation in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy for Bengal remains contingent on his progress in rehabilitation.

India’s Plans for the MCG Test

With the inclusion of Tanush Kotian, India aims to bolster their spin-bowling department for the crucial MCG Test. Kotian’s versatility as an all-rounder adds depth to the squad, providing skipper Rohit Sharma with an additional option to complement India’s bowling attack.

The ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy stands at a pivotal juncture, and the team management will look to capitalize on Kotian’s recent form to strengthen their position in the series.
