Shubman Gill to Make ODI Captaincy Debut Against New Zealand? Reports Suggest Possible Change

As per the latest reports, Shubman Gill could be set to make his ODI captaincy debut in India’s final group stage match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand on Sunday. Gill, who has previously led India in T20Is, might step up as skipper for the high-stakes clash against Mitchell Santner’s side.

Is Rohit Sharma Injured? Gill to Step In?

India’s regular captain, Rohit Sharma, suffered a hamstring injury during the Pakistan game, though he downplayed concerns during the post-match presentation. However, a report by Times of India suggests that Rohit missed net practice on Wednesday, opting out of warm-up drills at the ICC Academy. His restricted movements have raised speculation about a potential injury and the possibility of him missing the game against New Zealand.

According to The Indian Express, India might rest Rohit to prioritize his fitness, given that they have already qualified for the semi-finals. If that happens, Shubman Gill could lead the team in an ODI for the first time.

Gill himself had missed practice on Wednesday due to illness, but he returned on Thursday, spending an extended session batting in the nets. The 25-year-old is in red-hot form, having already scored 147 runs in two matches.

KL Rahul to Open With Gill? Rishabh Pant to Make a Comeback?

If the reports hold true, Rishabh Pant could finally make his Champions Trophy debut, slotting into the playing XI. KL Rahul might also move up the order to open alongside Gill in Rohit’s absence.

With India already securing a semi-final berth, this match provides an ideal opportunity for the team management to test new combinations while ensuring Rohit’s fitness for the knockouts.

All eyes will now be on the final call from the team management ahead of the crucial encounter against New Zealand.
