Shikhar Dhawan Backs India to Win Champions Trophy

The much-anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to begin on February 19, with India starting their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 at the Dubai International Stadium. Having won the tournament in 2013 under MS Dhoni and finishing runners-up in 2017, India enters the competition as one of the favorites.

Ahead of the tournament, former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan, one of India’s top performers in past ICC events, shared his thoughts on India’s chances and the rising talent to watch out for.

India’s Strong Chances in the Champions Trophy

Expressing confidence in the Indian squad, Dhawan said:
“I am quite confident about India. They have a solid team and played very well against England in their recent ODI series.”

However, he acknowledged the absence of Jasprit Bumrah as a major setback, calling him “the best bowler in the world”, whose accuracy and calm demeanor would be missed.

Harshit Rana: India’s X-Factor in the Tournament?

Dhawan pointed out young pacer Harshit Rana as a bowler to watch, believing he could be a breakout star in the tournament.
“He has a go-getter attitude and is not afraid of challenges. We saw his form in the England series, and I think he will seize this opportunity to provide the X-factor for India.”

Balanced Squad and In-Form Batters

India boasts a well-rounded squad with a mix of experience and youth. Dhawan highlighted the form of Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli, stating that they could be key to India’s success.
“Gill is so consistent, and I think he will have a great tournament. Rohit and Virat bring experience, and that makes India a tough team to beat.”

Competition From Other Teams

While India is a strong contender, Dhawan also tipped South Africa, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Australia as serious threats.

  • South Africa: “They have everything you need to win – experience, depth, and match-winners like Kagiso Rabada.”
  • Pakistan: “They will be dangerous in home conditions.”
  • New Zealand: “They are always in the mix in ICC tournaments.”
  • Australia: “They struggled against Sri Lanka, but players like Travis Head and Steve Smith make them a threat.”

Fond Memories of Champions Trophy Glory

Reflecting on his success in previous editions, Dhawan recalled how the 2013 Champions Trophy win was a turning point in his career. He was the leading run-scorer in both 2013 and 2017, and his century against South Africa in 2013 was a defining moment.

“Scoring big runs at the start of a tournament gives confidence. My self-belief went up, and I knew I belonged on that stage.”

As India gears up for another shot at Champions Trophy glory, the mix of experience, emerging stars like Harshit Rana, and the hunger for redemption from 2017 makes them a formidable force.
