Sanju Samson set to leave Rajasthan Royals after seven seasons with the franchise

After months of speculation and growing whispers in the IPL circuit, it now appears that Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper Sanju Samson is keen on parting ways with the franchise ahead of the IPL 2026 season.

According to an exclusive report by The Times of India (TOI), Samson and Delhi Capitals (DC) could be part of one of the biggest trades in recent years, with South African power-hitter Tristan Stubbs expected to move in the opposite direction.

Insider sources reveal that both franchises have already begun trade discussions, though the deal remains complex due to the multiple conditions proposed by both parties.

DC-RR Trade Talks Hit a Stalemate

The report suggests that while Delhi Capitals are keen to sign Samson, they are reluctant to trade any of their core players. Rajasthan Royals initially proposed a swap deal involving KL Rahul, but DC rejected the offer outright, unwilling to part ways with their star opener.

When RR later proposed a revised trade, seeking Tristan Stubbs and an additional uncapped Indian player, DC again declined, citing concerns over team balance.

Despite this, both camps have kept communication lines open, with final decisions expected to hinge on franchise owners’ approvals before the IPL 2026 mini auction in December.

RR Owner to Decide Samson’s Fate

According to sources, the final call regarding Samson’s future will rest with Rajasthan Royals’ owner, who has reportedly been in touch with both Samson and DC’s top management.

While Samson has expressed his desire for a “fresh start” after a disappointing 2025 season, RR remains hesitant to let go of their long-standing captain and one of the most influential figures in the franchise’s history.

“Negotiations are happening at the top level, but it’s a sensitive situation. Sanju has been the face of the franchise, and a decision of this magnitude will require management approval,” the report quoted a source as saying.

KL Rahul & KKR’s Interest Complicate the Equation

Adding more intrigue to the trade saga, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have reportedly shown interest in acquiring KL Rahul, who remains a central figure in Delhi’s lineup.

KKR, looking for a proven leader and top-order stabilizer, view Rahul as the ideal candidate to lead their side after a shaky 2025 campaign.

However, DC have dismissed any possibility of parting with Rahul, citing his consistency and leadership qualities. The franchise views Rahul as integral to their plans, especially with Axar Patel continuing as captain.

Given DC’s firm stance, KKR’s pursuit of Rahul seems unlikely unless major reshuffles occur ahead of the mini auction.

Sanju Samson’s Recent Form

Sanju Samson’s decision to move could also be influenced by his recent dip in form and fitness concerns. In IPL 2025, the wicketkeeper-batter scored just 287 runs in 12 innings at an average of 25.18 — a stark contrast to his stellar performances in earlier seasons.

Despite his struggles, Samson’s reputation as a clean striker and tactically sharp leader continues to attract attention. A move to Delhi Capitals could provide the 30-year-old with a new environment and fresh challenge, alongside stars like KL Rahul, Axar Patel, and Rishabh Pant (rehabilitating).

Samson’s Previous Stint with Delhi Capitals

It’s worth noting that Sanju Samson previously represented Delhi (then Delhi Daredevils) during the 2016–2017 IPL seasons, where he made a mark as a promising young batter. His potential move back to the franchise now adds a nostalgic twist to the unfolding story.

If the trade goes through, it will mark one of the biggest player swaps in recent IPL memory — reshaping the dynamics of both RR and DC heading into 2026.

Fan Reactions on Social Media

Fans have flooded X (formerly Twitter) with mixed reactions.

“End of an era if Sanju leaves RR 💔,” one fan wrote.
Another quipped, “Samson to DC? Stubbs + Pant + Rahul = firepower unlocked!”

While some expressed disappointment at Rajasthan’s willingness to let go of their captain, others believe a change could revive Samson’s IPL career.
