Sachin Tendulkar Appeals to BCCI & ECB: Preserve Pataudi Trophy Legacy Amid Renaming Controversy

The cricketing world recently witnessed a wave of emotion and reflection as the planned renaming ceremony of the Pataudi Trophy—originally scheduled for June 14 at Lord’s—was postponed due to the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed over 270 lives. The tragedy prompted South African and Australian teams to observe a minute’s silence and wear black armbands during Day 2 of the World Test Championship final at Lord’s.

While the ceremonial event’s future remains uncertain, concerns over the legacy of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi have taken center stage.

Sachin Tendulkar Steps In to Save Pataudi Trophy Legacy

Amid speculation that the Pataudi Trophy would be renamed as the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, fans and cricket historians expressed disappointment, believing it would erase an important chapter of India-England Test history. Sachin Tendulkar, whose name was reportedly part of the proposed new title, intervened by reaching out directly to both the BCCI and the ECB.

According to a Cricbuzz report, following Tendulkar’s intervention, BCCI Secretary and ICC President Jay Shah also voiced his support for preserving Pataudi’s legacy, advising against renaming the trophy.

“The series carries a name deeply embedded in India’s cricketing history. MAK Pataudi deserves to be remembered,” said a source familiar with the developments.

ECB Responds: Pataudi’s Name to Be Retained in New Format

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is now considering a compromise: while the main trophy may still be renamed to honor James Anderson and Sachin Tendulkar, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s name will live on through a special medallion, awarded to the series-winning captain.

“Yes, there is a confirmed plan to retain the Pataudi link in the England-India series. It is likely that the authorities will name a medallion in the name of the late MAK Pataudi,” an ECB spokesperson told Cricbuzz.

This move aims to preserve the emotional and historical relevance associated with Nawab Pataudi, who not only captained India with distinction but also left an indelible mark on the sport after recovering from a career-altering eye injury.

A Legacy Worth Protecting

The Pataudi Trophy, named in honour of Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, was instituted in 2007 for India-England Test series played in India. It has since symbolized the shared cricketing heritage between the two nations and served as a tribute to one of Indian cricket’s most charismatic leaders.

Critics of the proposed name change argued that combining Tendulkar and Anderson’s names—while honoring their respective contributions—unfairly diluted the tribute to a true pioneer of Indian Test cricket.

Awaiting Final Confirmation

With India’s tour of England set to begin on June 20, and players currently training in London—engaging in intra-squad games—the official confirmation of any renaming or restructuring of the trophy presentation ceremony is expected within the next couple of days.

For now, Tendulkar’s respectful yet firm intervention has reignited conversations about legacy, recognition, and cricket’s cultural memory. Whether through a trophy or medallion, it is increasingly clear that Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi’s contributions will not be forgotten.

Stay tuned for further updates as the series approaches and an official announcement is made by BCCI and ECB.
