Rohit Sharma Aims To Equal MS Dhoni’s Elite Captaincy Milestone In Champions Trophy Final

Rohit Sharma is on the verge of creating history as he prepares to lead India in the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand on Sunday (March 9). With this, Rohit will become the first captain in the world to lead a team in all four ICC tournament finals—World Test Championship (2023), ODI World Cup (2023), T20 World Cup (2024), and Champions Trophy (2025).

Rohit Sharma’s Historic Captaincy Feat

MS Dhoni led India to the finals of the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy but never had the opportunity to captain in a World Test Championship (WTC) final. Similarly, Kane Williamson has led New Zealand in the finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup, 2021 WTC, and 2021 T20 World Cup, but never in the Champions Trophy.

With his leadership in the Champions Trophy final, Rohit Sharma will surpass both Dhoni and Williamson as the only captain to lead in all four ICC finals.

Chance to Equal MS Dhoni’s Captaincy Record

The Champions Trophy final gives Rohit Sharma the opportunity to equal MS Dhoni’s elite record of winning ICC titles in both ODI and T20I formats.

Dhoni remains the only captain to have won the ODI World Cup (2011), T20 World Cup (2007), and Champions Trophy (2013). Meanwhile, Rohit has already won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and victory on Sunday will make him only the second captain to win both ODI and T20 ICC trophies.

If India wins the Champions Trophy 2025, Rohit will join this elite list as only the sixth captain in history to win multiple ICC trophies.

India’s Greatest ICC Trophy Winners

A win in the final will also allow Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to become the first Indian players to win four ICC titles. They will surpass MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Virender Sehwag, and Harbhajan Singh, who all have three ICC trophies each.

Rohit’s Champions Trophy 2025 Campaign So Far

  • India remains unbeaten in the tournament with four wins—beating Bangladesh, Pakistan, New Zealand (Group Stage), and Australia (Semi-final).
  • Rohit Sharma has a 100% win record in the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.
  • If India wins, Rohit will become only the third captain after Clive Lloyd and Ricky Ponting to win multiple ICC titles with an unbeaten streak.

Final Showdown in Dubai

The Champions Trophy 2025 final between India and New Zealand on March 9 is set to be a historic encounter. If India emerges victorious, Rohit Sharma will cement his legacy as one of the greatest captains in Indian cricket history, matching MS Dhoni’s record and becoming one of the only six captains to win multiple ICC trophies.
