Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has voiced his discontent with the terminology used during the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, particularly the word “sold” when referring to players being acquired by franchises. Uthappa believes that a more respectful term should be adopted for the auction process going forward.
Uthappa expressed his views while commentating during the IPL 2025 clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Engaging in a discussion with fellow former cricketer Harbhajan Singh, Uthappa emphasized how the language used in the auction can sometimes feel demeaning to players.
“It is unfair most of the time. I don’t like the word ‘sold’. I hope there will be something more respectable in the future,” Uthappa stated during his commentary on JioCinema.

Harbhajan Singh Criticizes IPL’s Auction System
Uthappa’s comments came as a response to Harbhajan Singh, who also pointed out the unfair nature of the IPL auction process. Harbhajan highlighted how good players often go unsold, citing the example of Shardul Thakur, who initially found no buyers before being picked up as a replacement player by LSG.
“IPL is very unfair at times as good players don’t get franchises. A player like Shardul Thakur went unsold in the auction,” Harbhajan remarked.
Thakur, however, silenced his critics in LSG’s match against SRH, delivering a stunning four-wicket haul (4/34) to play a pivotal role in his team’s victory.
Big Names Left Unsold in IPL 2025 Auction
The IPL 2025 mega auction, which was held in Jeddah, saw several big-name cricketers shockingly go unsold. Among them were:
- David Warner
- Jonny Bairstow
- Mustafizur Rahman
- Keshav Maharaj
These omissions sparked debate among fans and experts alike, questioning the fairness and unpredictability of the IPL auction system.
While Uthappa’s suggestion for a change in terminology may seem like a small adjustment, it raises an important conversation about how players are perceived and valued in the franchise-based system. Whether the BCCI and IPL governing council take note of his suggestion remains to be seen.
