Physical abuse in cricket

Ripon Mondal, Tshepho Ntuli Involved in On-Field Altercation During Emerging Test in Dhaka

Cricket may be called a gentleman’s game, but tempers can still flare — even in the Emerging circuit.

A heated moment unfolded during Day 2 of the 2nd Emerging Test between Bangladesh and South Africa in Dhaka on Wednesday when Bangladesh pacer Ripon Mondal and South African bowler Tshepo Ntuli were involved in a physical altercation that briefly halted play.

The incident occurred shortly after Ripon launched Ntuli for a six. As the Bangladeshi batter turned to walk toward his partner, he glanced at the bowler — a moment that seemingly triggered Ntuli, who aggressively charged toward Ripon. What followed was a tense exchange of words and physical contact as the two players began shoving each other on the field.

Despite the on-field umpire’s immediate efforts to separate the duo, tensions escalated, and it took additional intervention from teammates and the second umpire to restore order.

Bangladesh In Command

Before the altercation, Bangladesh had asserted their dominance in the match. The hosts posted a competitive 371-run total in their first innings, anchored by a brilliant 109-run knock from Iftakhar Hossain Ifti. Ripon also contributed with a valuable 43 runs down the order, showcasing his all-round ability.

South Africa’s bowling effort was led by Andile Mokgakane, who claimed four wickets, while Ntuli managed to grab three wickets despite the controversial episode.

South Africa Struggling in Response

In response to Bangladesh’s solid total, the South African Emerging side has found the going tough. At stumps on Day 2, the visitors were reeling at 152/6, still trailing by 219 runs. With wickets falling at regular intervals, Bangladesh holds a strong grip on the match.

The first match of the series had ended in a draw, and the South Africans had earlier lost the One-Day leg of the tour 2-1.

What’s Next?

The on-field clash between Ripon and Ntuli is expected to be reviewed by match officials, and disciplinary actions may follow. Cricket boards of both countries are yet to release official statements, but such incidents often lead to fines or match bans depending on the severity.

While the match continues, this unfortunate incident has overshadowed what has otherwise been a competitive series between two promising squads brimming with young talent.
