‘Retiring Is Rohit Sharma’s Call, But Captaincy…’: BCCI To Decide India Star’s Future After Champions Trophy Final

The Champions Trophy 2025 final could play a crucial role in Rohit Sharma’s future as India’s captain, as the BCCI plans ahead for the next ICC cycle. According to reports, the board wants a stable leader for the upcoming World Test Championship (2025-27) and the 2027 ODI World Cup, and Rohit’s future as captain will be discussed once the tournament concludes.

BCCI To Hold Tough Discussions Post-Champions Trophy

While Rohit Sharma (37) has the freedom to decide on his retirement, the BCCI will deliberate on his captaincy future after the Champions Trophy final. A BCCI source told The Times of India:

“Rohit still believes there is some cricket left in him. He has been told to communicate his plans going forward. Retiring is his call, but there will be another discussion around continuing with captaincy. Rohit himself understands the need to have a stable captain if the team wants to prepare for a World Cup.”

Virat Kohli Also Consulted, But No Major Concerns

The report also mentions that BCCI has consulted Virat Kohli regarding his future, but there is no immediate concern surrounding him.

“There have been talks with Kohli too, but there doesn’t seem to be much anxiety around him,” the source added.

Agarkar & Gambhir Have Already Spoken to Rohit

It is understood that chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir have already discussed Rohit’s future with him following India’s tour of Australia in January 2025.

Aiming for Third ICC Trophy

With 67 Tests, 272 ODIs, and 159 T20Is to his name, Rohit is eyeing his third ICC title (second as captain) when India faces New Zealand in the Champions Trophy final on Sunday, March 9.

Will Rohit Follow MS Dhoni’s Footsteps?

Historically, MS Dhoni stepped down as ODI captain in 2017, giving Virat Kohli ample time to lead before the 2019 World Cup. In contrast, Rohit took over from Kohli in 2021, less than two years before the 2023 ODI World Cup.

With India already naming Shubman Gill as ODI vice-captain, it is an indication that the 25-year-old could be the next in line whenever Rohit decides to step away from captaincy.

The final against New Zealand could very well be a defining moment in Rohit Sharma’s leadership journey. Will he continue leading India, or will the team prepare for a new captain soon? The answer awaits after March 9.
