Rashid Khan Equals Unwanted IPL Record Amid GT’s Playoff Push

Gujarat Titans’ star leg-spinner Rashid Khan found himself in an uncomfortable spotlight during their high-stakes clash against Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Afghan ace equalled the record for the most sixes conceded in a single IPL season — 31 sixes — matching a mark previously set by his GT teammate Mohammed Siraj (then with RCB) in IPL 2022.
Rashid was taken for three sixes across his four overs, including the record-equalling hit by Dewald Brevis, who launched a full, wide delivery over long-off in the 16th over. The moment was a symbolic reflection of Rashid’s struggles this season — misfired lengths and uncharacteristic inconsistency.
Gujarat Titans assistant coach Aashish Kapoor shed light on Rashid’s below-par form, attributing some of the issues to lingering effects of a back surgery he underwent last year.
“Sometimes when you are in pain during matches, you tend to alter your bowling action to reduce discomfort,” Kapoor said.
“He’s now working on correcting his front-arm position and has started bowling better in the last couple of games. Hopefully, we’ll see the vintage Rashid soon.”
Despite Rashid’s dip in form, Gujarat Titans still managed to put up a spirited effort with the ball. However, Chennai Super Kings had already posted a massive 230/5 on the board, riding on explosive half-centuries from Devon Conway (52) and Dewald Brevis (57).
GT pacer Prasidh Krishna (2/22) was the standout bowler amid the carnage, keeping GT’s hopes alive in the chase. With playoffs looming, Gujarat Titans must win this match to clinch a top-two finish, which would give them two shots at a place in the IPL 2025 final.
As the Titans look to tighten their grip on the playoffs, all eyes will remain on Rashid Khan — will he shake off this phase and return to form just in time to make a difference in the business end of the tournament?
