Tom Latham - New Zealand

NZ vs PAK 2025: Tom Latham ruled out of ODIs with fractured hand

New Zealand has suffered a major setback ahead of the ODI series against Pakistan, as captain Tom Latham has been ruled out due to a fractured right hand. The injury, sustained during a training session, will keep the experienced wicketkeeper-batter sidelined for at least four weeks.

Michael Bracewell to Continue as Captain, Henry Nicholls Returns

With Latham ruled out, Michael Bracewell—who successfully led New Zealand in the recent T20I series win over Pakistan (4-1)—will continue as captain for the ODIs. Meanwhile, Henry Nicholls has been called up as Latham’s replacement, marking his return to the national side after recovering from injury.

Additionally, the wicketkeeping duties will now be handed over to Mitch Hay.

More Squad Adjustments for the Black Caps

Apart from Latham’s absence, New Zealand will also be without Will Young after the first ODI, as he is set to leave the squad to be with his wife for the birth of their first child. As a result, the uncapped 23-year-old batter Rhys Mariu has received his maiden call-up to the squad.

Coach Gary Stead on Squad Changes & Player Opportunities

New Zealand head coach Gary Stead acknowledged the challenges posed by the unavailability of key players but viewed it as an opportunity for others to step up.

🗣️ “We’ve had to be flexible this tour with numerous players unavailable for different reasons. What it does do is offer opportunities to other players, and it’s nice to introduce Rhys into the environment for the first time, as well as welcome back Henry. Henry’s been in good form since returning from his three-month injury lay-off, and he’ll add valuable skills and experience to the team,” Stead said.

Nicholls, who last played for New Zealand in November 2024 against Sri Lanka, has been in excellent domestic form, scoring five 50+ scores in his last six innings since returning from a calf injury.
