Navjot Singh Sidhu Defends Rohit Sharma After SCG Test Exclusion

Former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu has come out in strong defense of Rohit Sharma after the Indian skipper opted out of the playing XI for the ongoing SCG Test against Australia. Sidhu voiced his concerns on social media, highlighting the significance of backing a captain, especially during challenging times.

Sharma’s Form and Team India’s Struggles

Rohit Sharma’s leadership has been under scrutiny after a string of poor performances by Team India in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Under his captaincy, India suffered heavy defeats at the Adelaide Oval and the MCG and narrowly escaped a loss at the Gabba, thanks to rain.

Sharma’s own batting struggles have compounded the criticism. The opener has managed just 31 runs in five innings at a paltry average of 6.20, failing to inspire confidence with the bat.

Sidhu’s Defense of Rohit Sharma

On Day 1 of the SCG Test, Sidhu took to X (formerly Twitter) to question the decision to exclude Sharma. He stated:
“A captain should never be removed or given the option to opt out. Such decisions send the wrong signals to the opposition and undermine the captain’s stature within the team.”

Sidhu further emphasized that Sharma, who has been instrumental in nurturing young talents and shaping the team, deserves more respect. He lauded the Indian skipper for his contributions, stating:
“Rohit Sharma built this team and prioritized younger talents throughout his leadership. This treatment does not reflect his value to Indian cricket.”

Bumrah Steps Up Again as Captain

Rohit Sharma had previously missed the series opener in Perth due to family commitments, during which Jasprit Bumrah led the team to a historic 295-run victory. Once again, Bumrah has taken charge in Sharma’s absence for the SCG Test.

The SCG Test is a crucial match for India, as they aim to level the series and keep their hopes alive for a spot in the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC) final.

India’s Recent Challenges Under Rohit’s Leadership

Sharma’s captaincy has faced criticism beyond the current series. In October-November, India endured a 0-3 series whitewash at home against New Zealand, further intensifying questions about his leadership.

As the SCG Test unfolds, all eyes will be on Bumrah’s leadership and India’s ability to bounce back, while debates around Sharma’s captaincy and treatment by team management are sure to continue.
