Ruturaj Gaikwad - CSK

“MS Dhoni’s Trust Meant a Lot to Me” – CSK Skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) underwent a significant leadership transition ahead of IPL 2024, with MS Dhoni handing over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad. The decision caught the young opener by surprise, as discussions about the change had started right after CSK’s title-winning season in 2023.

Although Gaikwad’s first season as captain did not go as planned, with CSK failing to qualify for the playoffs after a do-or-die loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the franchise has continued to back him as skipper for IPL 2025.

‘Dhoni’s Trust Was Overwhelming’: Gaikwad on His Captaincy Appointment

Reflecting on the moment he was handed the captaincy, Gaikwad recalled how Dhoni’s trust and support meant everything to him.

“Just a week before the tournament last year, MS Dhoni came up to me and said, ‘I’m not leading this year—you are.’ I was taken aback and asked, ‘From the first game? Are you sure?’

With just a few days to prepare, it felt overwhelming. But he reassured me, saying, ‘This is your team. You make your own decisions. I won’t interfere—except when field placements are a 50-50 call. Even then, it’s not a compulsion to follow my advice.’ That trust meant a lot to me.” Gaikwad said via JioHotstar.

Shane Watson Backs CSK’s Leadership Transition

Former CSK all-rounder Shane Watson compared Gaikwad’s situation to his own experience of MS Dhoni’s faith in players, citing how Dhoni’s backing led to his resurgence in CSK colors after a tough stint with Bengaluru.

“I was a bit surprised that Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj, considering his incredible leadership skills. But he understands the importance of a seamless transition, and it’s better for that to happen while he’s still around to guide the team.

The incredible part is that, even at 42, MS Dhoni is still delivering moments of brilliance. Though his role is more limited now, his impact on the team—and especially the fans—remains invaluable.”

Aakash Chopra on Dhoni’s Role in CSK’s Future

Cricketer-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra also weighed in on the captaincy change and Dhoni’s lower batting position in IPL 2024.

“When your season doesn’t go well, people start questioning—Dhoni is batting low, Dhoni is no longer captain—was he just occupying a place?

Personally, I don’t see it that way. I think this is a big part of Chennai Super Kings’ and Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s strategy—you have to hold the hand of the next king in line.”

CSK Set for IPL 2025 Opener Against Mumbai Indians

CSK will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign with a high-voltage clash against Mumbai Indians on March 23—a fixture dubbed as the El Clásico of the IPL.

Reports suggest that this season could be Dhoni’s last as a player, setting the stage for an emotional farewell for one of the IPL’s greatest icons.
