In a disturbing development, India’s star pacer Mohammed Shami, currently representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2025, has reportedly received a death threat via email. The incident has triggered serious security concerns just days before SRH’s crucial league match against Delhi Capitals.
Threat Demanded ₹1 Crore
According to reports by Amar Ujala, a threatening email was sent to the 34-year-old cricketer from an individual identifying himself as Rajput Sindhar. The email contained a demand for ₹1 crore and issued a direct threat to Shami’s life should the demand not be met.
The email was allegedly received on the evening of May 4, and it was Shami’s brother, Mohammed Haseeb, who noticed it first. Concerned for his brother’s safety, Haseeb promptly reported the matter to the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Amroha, Uttar Pradesh. A formal complaint was lodged, and the case has since been forwarded to the Cyber Cell for further investigation.
Initial findings suggest that the email may have originated from Karnataka, and the suspect has been identified as Prabhakar. The authorities are now working to trace the source and verify the identity of the individual behind the threat.
Not an Isolated Incident
This incident comes just weeks after Gautam Gambhir, India’s men’s cricket team head coach, also received a similar email-based death threat. The recurrence of such threats against prominent Indian cricket figures has raised concerns over digital security and the well-being of national players.
Shami’s IPL 2025 Campaign So Far
Mohammed Shami joined Sunrisers Hyderabad for a whopping ₹10 crore in the IPL 2025 mega auction after being released by Gujarat Titans. Despite the high expectations, Shami’s performance has been underwhelming this season.
- Matches Played: 9
- Wickets Taken: 6
- Most Expensive Spell: 75 runs in 4 overs vs Punjab Kings on April 12
- Debut for SRH: March 23 vs Rajasthan Royals (1 wicket in 3 overs)
That spell against Punjab Kings was one of the most expensive in IPL history, second only to England pacer Jofra Archer’s 76-run hammering by SRH batters earlier this season.
Crucial Match vs Delhi Capitals
Shami is expected to feature in SRH’s next league encounter against Delhi Capitals on Monday, May 5, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. It will be a must-win game for Sunrisers Hyderabad, as a loss will officially end their playoff hopes.
Security and Player Wellbeing in Focus
Following the complaint, police authorities have tightened security around Mohammed Shami and his family. The Cyber Cell is reportedly working swiftly to trace the sender’s IP address and digital footprint.
This situation once again highlights the growing challenges modern athletes face in the digital age—not just on the field, but off it, as public figures vulnerable to cyber abuse and threats.
