A Tribute to Cricketing Greats
Alongside Rohit Sharma, other stalwarts of Indian cricket were also honoured:
- The Grand Stand Level 3 will now be known as the Sharad Pawar Stand, in recognition of the former MCA President and a key administrator in Indian cricket.
- The Level 4 stand will be renamed the Ajit Wadekar Stand, paying homage to the former India captain who led the team to historic overseas victories.
- Additionally, the match-day office at the MCA Pavilion will be named after former MCA President Amol Kale.
This series of dedications represents MCA’s commitment to preserving the legacy of individuals who have significantly shaped Mumbai and Indian cricket.
MCA’s Official Statement
The decision to rename the stands was originally proposed by Mr. Milind Narvekar and seconded by Mr. Jitendra Awhad, as confirmed by MCA’s official release.
“The MCA remains committed to preserving the legacy of stalwarts who have made invaluable contributions to the sport while continuing its mission of cricketing excellence,” the statement read.
A Symbol of Respect and Legacy
MCA President Ajinkya Naik expressed the emotional weight of the moment and its importance in honouring the rich history of Mumbai cricket.
“Today’s decisions reflect our deep respect for the pillars of Mumbai cricket and our determination to build an even stronger future,” Naik said. “These stands and this lounge shall forever echo the legacy of those who built Mumbai’s cricketing spirit – brick by brick, run by run.”
The decision to honour Rohit Sharma in particular resonates deeply with fans and cricketers alike. Sharma, who hails from Mumbai, has made Wankhede his home ground over the years, crafting unforgettable innings and achieving milestones that have brought pride not just to the city, but to the entire nation.
Focus on Grassroots Development
In addition to these dedications, MCA held a key discussion during the AGM regarding the financial support for cricket clubs affiliated with the association. A resolution was passed to increase the corpus for affiliated clubs to ₹75 crores, with plans to raise it further to ₹100 crores in the future.
This move underscores MCA’s commitment to:
- Strengthening grassroots-level infrastructure
- Ensuring long-term growth and sustainability of cricket across Mumbai
- Supporting emerging talent by creating better facilities and opportunities
A Fitting Honour for the Hitman
Rohit Sharma’s contribution to Indian cricket is undeniable. With multiple ICC trophies under his belt, five IPL titles as captain of the Mumbai Indians, and countless match-winning innings, the “Hitman” has become synonymous with excellence and elegance in modern-day cricket.
Naming a stand after him at Wankhede Stadium, the venue of India’s 2011 World Cup triumph and one of cricket’s most iconic grounds, is a fitting tribute that immortalizes his connection to the city and its cricketing heartbeat.
