Mayank Yadav to Visit New Zealand for Medical Consultation and Possible Back Surgery: Report

Indian speedster and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) pacer Mayank Yadav is reportedly set to travel to New Zealand in the coming days for a medical consultation regarding his persistent back issues. According to RevSportz, the visit could also involve a surgical procedure to correct the recurring problem, similar to the path taken by India’s ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the past.

Recurring Injury Halts IPL Comeback

Mayank Yadav had only recently returned to competitive cricket during IPL 2025, representing Lucknow Super Giants. However, just two matches into his comeback, the express pacer was ruled out of the tournament due to a recurrence of the same back injury that had sidelined him for several months earlier.

The 21-year-old had made headlines in IPL 2024 with his blistering pace, clocking 156.7 kmph, the fastest delivery of the tournament. His performances led to his India debut in December 2024 against Bangladesh. Unfortunately, that series also marked the start of his back troubles, leading to a 3-4 month layoff.

Mismanagement Concerns Resurface

A report from the Times of India alleged that the LSG team management rushed Yadav back into action, ignoring warning signs like back swelling. The report claimed that the franchise, along with the Centre of Excellence (CoE), did not properly follow the medical protocol, and merely “ticked boxes” in the treatment process.

This mishandling has reportedly worsened his condition, leading to this next crucial step — seeking expert medical advice abroad.

Following the Bumrah Path

Mayank Yadav’s New Zealand consultation appears to be inspired by Jasprit Bumrah, who successfully returned to international cricket after undergoing back surgery in New Zealand under the care of renowned spinal specialists. Even when Bumrah suffered setbacks during the 2021-22 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, his scans were sent to the same group of doctors in New Zealand.

This move indicates a serious approach to ensuring Mayank’s long-term fitness, especially considering his potential to become a mainstay in India’s pace attack.
