Jasprit Bumrah Wins ICC Player of the Month for December

Indian Test vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah has been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for December 2024, following his stellar performances in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. On the women’s side, Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland clinched the award for her exceptional contributions in ODIs against India and New Zealand.

The winners were selected via a global vote that included fans registered on ICC’s official website and a specialist panel comprising ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and media representatives.

Bumrah’s Dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Bumrah’s December was nothing short of sensational. He played a pivotal role in the tightly-contested Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, claiming 22 wickets at an average of 14.22 across three Tests, earning him the Player of the Series award.

Bumrah edged out fierce competition from Australian captain Pat Cummins and South African pacer Dane Paterson to secure his second ICC Player of the Month title.

In his statement, Bumrah expressed his delight:

“I am thrilled to be named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for December. It is always humbling to be chosen for individual accolades, and it’s nice to be recognized for your efforts. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy was one of the most closely-fought contests ever, and it was an honour for me to go out there and perform for my country.”

Annabel Sutherland Shines in ODIs

Annabel Sutherland had a standout month as well, amassing 269 runs at an average of 67.25 and taking nine wickets in five matches. Her consistent all-round performances helped Australia secure ODI series victories against both India and New Zealand, earning her Player of the Series awards in both series.

Sutherland triumphed over India’s Smriti Mandhana and South Africa’s Nonkululeko Mlaba to win the women’s Player of the Month award.

In her statement, Sutherland said:

“December was a great month for us, and it was nice to contribute to the team’s success. Those ODIs were really important ahead of the Women’s Cricket World Cup, and it was great to win both series against India and New Zealand.”

Looking Ahead: More Glory on the Horizon?

Both Bumrah and Sutherland remain in contention for prestigious ICC annual awards:

  • Jasprit Bumrah has been nominated for the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year and the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year.
  • Annabel Sutherland is in the running for the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year and the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year.

With their recent form, both players are strong contenders to add more accolades to their already illustrious careers.
