IPL Turns Golden Goose for BCCI: Contributes 59% of Revenue in FY 2023-24

The Indian Premier League (IPL) continues to be a financial juggernaut for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), contributing a staggering 59% to its total revenue for the financial year 2023-24. Out of the ₹9,741.7 crore earned by the BCCI, IPL alone brought in ₹5,761 crore, as per a report by The Hindu Business Line, quoting insights from Rediffusion.

Since its inception in 2007, the IPL has grown into the world’s premier T20 franchise league, featuring top cricketers from India and across the globe. With 10 teams in the fray, the league’s popularity has led to skyrocketing media rights, making it the BCCI’s most prized asset. According to business strategist Lloyd Mathias, the IPL is a “golden goose” that continues to drive unparalleled profitability and has also provided a platform for domestic players to shine.

Meanwhile, BCCI’s revenue from non-IPL sources was significantly lower. Only ₹361 crore came from media rights sales for international matches, underlining the heavy reliance on IPL for financial health. However, experts believe the board is yet to tap the full potential of its domestic circuit.

Sandeep Goyal, Chief of Rediffusion, emphasized that traditional formats like the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and CK Nayudu Trophy hold vast untapped commercial value. He also highlighted that BCCI’s financial reserves stand at around ₹30,000 crore, generating ₹1,000 crore annually in interest, and projected a 10–12% annual revenue growth driven by sponsorships, media deals, and ticketing.

Interestingly, the report also points out that the International Cricket Council (ICC), despite being the sport’s global governing body, relies heavily on the BCCI for funding—an indication of the Indian board’s financial dominance in world cricket.
