Grand Slam Style T20 League

IPL in Danger Because of Saudi Arabia? Arun Dhumal Breaks Silence

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is set to begin on March 22, and anticipation is at an all-time high. Over the years, IPL has established itself as the biggest cricket league in the world, both in terms of popularity and revenue. However, recent reports suggest that Saudi Arabia is planning to enter the franchise cricket market with its own high-budget league. This has sparked speculation about a potential threat to IPL’s dominance.

Addressing these concerns, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal finally broke his silence, giving clarity on the matter.

Saudi Arabia’s Growing Interest in Cricket

Saudi Arabia has been making significant investments in sports, particularly football, Formula 1, and golf, in an effort to expand its global sports footprint. Reports indicate that the country is now looking to enter the cricketing world and is considering launching a T20 franchise league that could rival IPL in terms of financial backing and player salaries.

While there has been no official confirmation, these speculations have raised eyebrows within the cricketing community. Given Saudi Arabia’s immense financial resources, a well-planned cricket league from the region could attract top players from across the globe.

Arun Dhumal’s Response to Saudi Arabia’s Cricket League Plans

When questioned about a potential challenge from Saudi Arabia, Arun Dhumal dismissed the rumors, saying that there is no concrete development yet. He pointed out that Saudi Arabia lacks the cricketing infrastructure needed to host a tournament of IPL’s scale.

“There is no point discussing something on the basis of speculation. There is nothing on the table for discussion with everyone (all stakeholders),” Dhumal told PTI.

“As far as my knowledge goes, there is no infrastructure as of now in Saudi Arabia that can cater to a tournament of this scale. So, there is no point discussing speculative stories.”

His comments indicate that, as of now, IPL has no immediate competition from Saudi Arabia, and there is no official proposal for a cricket league from the region.

Is IPL’s Dominance at Risk?

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is currently valued at $12 billion, making it one of the richest sporting leagues in the world. With top cricketers earning massive salaries and franchises securing billion-dollar sponsorship deals, IPL’s financial strength remains unmatched.

Arun Dhumal also emphasized that IPL is not concerned about competition from other leagues. Instead, the BCCI supports the global expansion of cricket.

“The idea of getting cricket into the Olympics is that the game grows through the length and breadth of the globe. It is good that more leagues are taking shape, and we don’t see anybody as a threat,” Dhumal said.

He further added:

“We would want to make sure that more and more games happen across different territories, whether it is Saudi Arabia, America, or Europe. Nobody can stop anybody, and we would not want to stop anyone.”

These statements suggest that BCCI is not worried about competition and instead wants to see the game expand globally.

IPL’s Global Expansion & Cricket in the Olympics

One of the biggest milestones for cricket is its inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking the sport’s return to the Olympic stage after 128 years.

With the game going global, the IPL’s influence continues to grow. The USA, UAE, and other regions are already becoming popular cricketing destinations, and BCCI has actively supported this expansion. IPL franchises have already invested in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the USA, further strengthening their global presence.

Conclusion: No Immediate Threat to IPL

While Saudi Arabia’s rumored entry into cricket has fueled speculation, IPL’s position remains secure for now. Lack of infrastructure, absence of an official league announcement, and BCCI’s confidence in IPL’s value suggest that there is no immediate threat to the tournament.

Instead of worrying about competition, BCCI and IPL are focusing on expanding cricket globally, making it a true international spectacle. IPL 2025 will once again prove why it remains the most dominant T20 league in the world.
