IPL Chairman Hints at Expanded 94-Match Tournament in 2028, But No New Teams: Report

The Indian Premier League (IPL) could see a significant expansion in 2028, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly considering a move to 94 matches per season. However, this expansion will not include new teams, maintaining the current 10-team format.

According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo, IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal confirmed that the BCCI is seriously considering the idea of transitioning to a full home-and-away format, which would require 94 matches. This change would align with the next media rights cycle beginning in 2028. Dhumal highlighted the growing fan interest in franchise cricket, particularly in T20 events, as a key factor in considering this expansion.

“Definitely, that might be an opportunity,” Dhumal said, discussing the potential changes in IPL’s structure. “We’ve been discussing in ICC; we’ve been discussing in-house in BCCI… we’ll have to talk more seriously about it and see how we can create maximum value for the stakeholders of the game.”

While the idea of increasing matches is on the table, Dhumal noted that with the existing commitments to bilateral cricket and ICC events, a jump from 74 to 94 games may not be feasible in the short term. However, he indicated that the changing landscape of cricket could make this a viable option in the future.

“Ideally, we’d want a larger window or maybe go on from 74 to 84 or 94 at some point… So that every team gets to play against every team home and away, for that, you need 94 games.”

Despite the logistical challenges, Dhumal emphasized that BCCI would make a decision when the time is right. He also acknowledged the evolving nature of the IPL and how crucial it is to adapt to the growing demands of fans and stakeholders.

IPL 2025: A New Champion in the Making?

As the 2025 edition of the IPL continues to unfold, Dhumal expressed his excitement over the competition, stating that he hopes to see a new champion this season. He pointed to teams like Delhi Capitals (DC), Punjab Kings, and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who have consistently performed well but never lifted the IPL trophy.

“Every year, it’s (IPL) been growing,” Dhumal said. “We are very glad how the fans have loved this tournament… we are hoping to carry on with this being a special edition, the 18th edition.” He further added, “Definitely, I would want somebody who has never won the tournament to lift the trophy this year.”

With all 10 teams still in contention for a playoff spot, the 2025 season promises to deliver more thrilling cricket and potentially crown a new IPL champion, making it a historic moment for the tournament.
