IPL 2023 – Biggest Flop Shows from 16th Edition

The 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has concluded with Chennai Super Kings winning a record-equalling fifth title. Many players finally struck gold. The likes of Rinku Singh and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the front runners to make it to the India squad after a string of excellent performances this season. Then there was Shubman Gill, who hit three centuries this season.

But the names mentioned above were the season’s hits, and one could ask, “Who were the flops, then?” We have compiled a list of players who struggled all season. It includes Indians as well as overseas players.

Five Biggest Flop Shows – Batsmen

Fans witnessed disappointing performances from popular names in the recently concluded IPL season. Some players who signed for a hefty sum on auction failed to deliver, while a few who did well in the last IPL couldn’t replicate that this season.

Let’s look at five batters who had a dreadful time in IPL 2023. These players also failed to meet the expectations of fans who pinned their hopes on them in online cricket betting.

Prithvi Shaw:

Known as the next big thing in Indian cricket, Shaw struggled in the whole tournament, making just 106 runs in eight innings. He was axed from the playing 11 after poor performances in the first six games. But he made a comeback in the last two matches, scoring 54 in Delhi Capital’s penultimate match of the season.

Dinesh Karthik:

Karthik’s sublime knocks last year helped him seal a place in the
Indian team for the 2022 T20 World Cup. However, he was not part of the squad after Rohit Sharma and his men lost in the semi-finals of the World Cup. Fans had hoped for another comeback; however, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter collected just 140 runs in 13 outings.

Deepak Hooda:

Hooda’s performance was so good that he was fast-tracked into the Indian team after IPL 2022. He made 451 runs that season. However, he couldn’t maintain that form this time around. He was eventually dropped for some games and brought back as an opener, but he failed to find his touch even then. LSG missed his role as a solid finisher.

Harry Brook:

Brook came with the tagline as England’s next batting sensation, so he was sold for a whopping Rs. 13.25 crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad. But the investment turned out to be a dud. The English youngster accounted for 190 runs in 11 matches. He did score a century against KKR at Eden Gardens but couldn’t maintain the momentum.

Mayank Agarwal:

Out of Team India’s red-ball strategy for a long time, Mayank would have wanted to use the IPL opportunity to mount a comeback. However, none of that sort happened, and he scored just one half-century despite getting sold for a massive Rs. 8.25 crore.

Five Biggest Flop Shows – Bowlers

Some of the top overseas and a few domestic bowlers had a forgettable IPL 2023. We look at five bowlers who will be itching to set the record straight in the IPL 17th edition.

Sam Curran:

Another Englishman who had perhaps fallen prey to the big bucks is Sam Curran. Earlier in the year, he became the most expensive IPL buy. But he only took ten wickets in 14 innings with an economy rate of more than ten. The left-arm batter also scored 276 runs with one fifty to his name.

Jofra Archer:

Archer is among the most gifted pace bowlers. Unsurprisingly, Mumbai Indians (MI) brought him in 2022 despite his injury concerns. He was expected to lead the MI bowling attack alongside Jasprit Bumrah. But it hasn’t worked out so far. Archer took just two wickets in five games this term. Later, he went back home owing to fitness issues.

Kagiso Rabada:

One of the best in the business, South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada has been one of the most consistent bowlers in IPL history. Nevertheless, he was far from his best this season, accounting for seven wickets in six games. To be fair to the South African, he didn’t get a long run for Punjab like last year.

Umran Malik:

The young pacer, hailing from Jammu and Kashmir, showed what he could do in the IPL 2020 season. From here on, his performance only rose, and he went on to play for India. Nevertheless, he was erratic this season and claimed just five wickets in four matches.

Umesh Yadav:

The Kolkata Knight Riders senior pacer had impressed with the new ball last season in IPL. He had a great time in the 2022-23 county season. But it was a different story in IPL this season. Umesh ended up with just one wicket in eight matches.

Concluding Thoughts

IPL is one of the most popular tournaments. That’s why players receive plenty of criticism when they struggle in a particular season. The batters and bowlers mentioned above were touted to have an excellent IPL 2023 campaign. But they came up with a string of poor performances.
