India’s Absence From WTC 2025 Final To Cost Lord’s £4 Million – Report

The World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final is set to take place at Lord’s in London from June 11-15, with Australia and South Africa battling for the prestigious title. However, the iconic cricket venue is expected to suffer a financial setback of approximately £4 million due to India’s failure to qualify for the final.

India’s Absence Affects Revenue Plans

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which operates Lord’s, had initially set premium ticket prices, anticipating a huge demand from Indian fans. However, with India missing out, ticket prices have been significantly reduced to ensure a fuller and more vibrant stadium rather than an empty ground with overpriced seats.

“Organisers had originally priced tickets at a premium rate, believing India fan demand would outstrip supply. However, the absence of India has significantly curtailed the financial windfall expected by MCC, underscoring the financial influence of Indian cricket across the global game,” The Times reported.

Following backlash over last year’s high ticket prices, MCC had already planned a review of pricing strategies. Now, in response to India’s absence, ticket prices for the WTC final have been slashed by nearly £50, with current rates ranging between £40 and £90.

“MCC members who purchased tickets before the price drop have been refunded the difference,” the report added.

India’s Disappointing WTC Campaign

India, who reached the last two WTC finals, were favorites to make a third consecutive appearance. However, a disastrous run of form saw them eliminated from the tournament.

  • 0-3 home series loss to New Zealand
  • 1-3 Border-Gavaskar Trophy loss to Australia

These back-to-back defeats meant India failed to secure a top-two spot in the WTC standings, allowing South Africa to qualify for their first-ever WTC final.

Lord’s To Host India-England Test In July

Following the WTC 2025 final, Lord’s will host the third Test of India’s tour of England from July 10-14. The Indian team will be looking to bounce back after their WTC disappointment and secure a historic Test series win in England.
