India close to final of World Test Championship after victory over Australia in second Test

Team India is inching closer to sealing their place in the ICC World Test Championship final after an emphatic win over Australia. India defeated Australia by six wickets in the second Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Sunday, 19 February. With this win, India retained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The second Test also marked India’s 100th win against Australia in all formats of international men’s cricket.

India’s points percentage increased from 61.66 to 64.06 after winning the second test. This was India’s 10th win in 16 matches in the 2021-23 WTC. They are second in the table with 123 points. Meanwhile, table-toppers Australia’s point percentage dropped from 70.83 to 66.67.

India have improved their win percentage but their place in the final of the WTC is still not confirmed. The reason is that Sri Lanka can still overtake India. India will have to win one of the remaining Tests of BGT 2023 to reach the final match. However, South Africa, who are currently ranked fourth, were knocked out of the race to reach the final after India’s win. Also, Australia will reach the finals but not sure yet.

India defeated Australia by six wickets in the second Test of BGT in Delhi. Australia scored 263 in their first innings, while India scored 262 in reply. Australia were bundled out for 113 in the second innings. Chasing 115, India lost a quick wicket, however, continued their good batting display to take an unassailable lead (2–0) in the four-match series. The third and fourth test will be played in Indore and Ahmedabad.

2021-23 ICC World Test Championship which started on August 4, 2021 and will end in June 2023. The final is to be played at The Oval in London from June 7 to 11. The tournament is played over two years, with 69 matches played over 27 series, with the top two teams of the table advancing to the final.
