Massive Security Deployment by Pakistan
In a robust effort to safeguard the tournament, over 12,664 officers from the Punjab Police will be deployed across key cities. The breakdown of deployment includes:
- 7,618 officers in Lahore
- 4,535 officers in Rawalpindi
Additionally, 411 Special Branch officers will bolster security operations, ensuring a smooth and secure event for all.
High-Tech Surveillance and Military Support
Pakistan’s security plan includes aerial monitoring with the support of the Pakistan Army and Rangers to enhance surveillance during the tournament. Critical routes leading to venues will be monitored via Safe City cameras, providing real-time tracking to preempt any security incidents.
A report by Geo News highlights these efforts, stating:
“Routes to the venues will be monitored via Safe City cameras, providing real-time surveillance to prevent any incidents.”
Karachi Leads the Security Efforts
With Karachi hosting the opening ceremony and several key matches, the Sindh Police is spearheading a detailed security operation:
- 5,000+ police personnel will be deployed for matches, including routes and team hotels.
- Senior officials, including the city commissioner, are overseeing the arrangements personally to ensure foolproof security.
A police spokesperson told PTI:
“Plans are being drawn up, and at least 5,000 or more security personnel, including units of the Sindh Police, would be deployed.”
Security Strengthened Amidst Political and Cross-Border Tensions
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), aware of potential security concerns, is taking no risks. A total of 17,000 personnel will be deployed across Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. This effort comes despite India opting not to cross the border, with their matches being relocated to Dubai for security reasons.
Tournament Format and Teams
The ICC Champions Trophy is making a comeback after eight years, featuring the top 8 teams from the 2023 ODI World Cup. These teams are divided into two groups:
- Group A: Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, New Zealand
- Group B: Afghanistan, England, Australia, South Africa
Each team will play three group-stage matches, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals. The winners of the semi-finals will compete in the grand finale for the coveted title.
