Bangladesh cricket legend Shakib Al Hasan is set to retire from ODIs after the Champions Trophy in 2025, marking the end of an illustrious career. However, his immediate future in the national team remains in limbo, particularly regarding the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan starting on November 6. The 37-year-old all-rounder recently hinted at his uncertain participation, pointing to a lack of clarity from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Shakib was initially anticipated to play his farewell Test against South Africa in Dhaka. However, citing security concerns, he didn’t return to Bangladesh, and now his status for the Afghanistan ODIs hangs in the balance. The player hinted that his involvement is at the discretion of the BCB, though he has not received any official communication from the board.

BCB Remains Non-Committal on Shakib’s Involvement in Afghanistan Series
The BCB has yet to issue a formal stance on Shakib’s participation in the series. This ambiguity has left the all-rounder in a frustrating position, uncertain about his role. Speaking to Cricbuzz, Shakib expressed his frustration, saying, “How can I tell whether I will be playing? The BCB should tell about it.”
Shakib had earlier announced his retirement from Test and T20 cricket earlier this year, hoping to conclude his Test career with a farewell game in Bangladesh. However, due to ongoing security concerns, his participation was halted. Now, as he eyes the Champions Trophy as a fitting finale to his ODI career, Shakib is eager for a decisive response from the BCB to help him plan his final chapters in international cricket.
