Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has stirred a storm with his recent comments on MS Dhoni, suggesting that the CSK legend should have retired after lifting the IPL 2023 trophy. According to Tiwary, continuing to play beyond that iconic moment is diminishing the legacy Dhoni built over the years.
In a candid conversation on Cricbuzz, Tiwary questioned Dhoni’s current form and fitness, pointing out that the former Indian captain has failed to make a meaningful impact in IPL 2025. “I think the right time for him to retire was in 2023, when he won the IPL trophy. He should have retired then,” said Tiwary.
Dhoni, who has scored just 76 runs from four games so far, managed a scratchy 30* off 26 balls in CSK’s recent 25-run loss to Delhi Capitals — their third consecutive defeat of the season. Tiwary emphasized that the legend’s magic seems to be fading, and fans have begun expressing their dissatisfaction.
“All the fame, name, and respect he earned from cricket — it’s kind of slipping away… the way fans came out on the roads and gave interviews against him, it should have been a sign that it’s not working anymore,” Tiwary said.
He didn’t stop there. Tiwary also called out CSK head coach Stephen Fleming, criticizing the explanation that Dhoni can’t bat for long stretches due to knee issues.
“If you can field for 20 overs, keep wickets, dive sideways — then your knees don’t hurt. But when you’re sent out to bat, suddenly it’s about ‘10 overs only’? It’s confusing. The decisions being taken aren’t in the interest of the team,” Tiwary added.
He believes it’s time for someone within the management to take a firm call on Dhoni’s role in the team. “A strong call should be made, and someone needs to explain — if it’s not happening anymore, then it’s okay, just let it go,” he concluded.
As CSK prepare to take on Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on April 8, pressure mounts not just on the team’s performance, but also on Dhoni’s presence and influence in the XI.
