Following Rohit Sharma’s announcement of his Test retirement, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla confirmed that the decision was entirely the Indian captain’s own. Shukla stressed that the Board did not exert any pressure on the 38-year-old, clarifying that Rohit made the call independently.
In an interview with PTI, Shukla expressed full support for Rohit’s decision, emphasizing the Board’s policy of respecting players’ choices when it comes to retirement. He also praised Rohit for his immense contributions to Test cricket, calling him a “great batsman.”
“As far as Rohit Sharma’s retirement from Test cricket is concerned, he has made his own decision. We welcome his decision,” said Shukla. “It is our policy that the players who take the decision of retirement—we do not put any pressure on them, nor do we suggest anything.”

Rohit’s Test retirement comes ahead of India’s five-match Test series against England, which begins on June 20. Shukla also addressed speculation about the Indian Test captaincy, stating that it would be the selectors’ decision and asked for no further speculations on the matter.
“We wish him luck for his future,” Shukla added, acknowledging Rohit’s ongoing contributions to Indian cricket.
As of now, Rohit remains available for limited-overs formats, and his leadership and experience are expected to play a pivotal role in India’s future success.
