Australia’s pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood has been cleared to return for the third Test against India in Brisbane, with skipper Pat Cummins confirming he will replace Scott Boland as the only change in Australia’s playing XI.
Hazlewood, who missed the Adelaide Test due to a side strain sustained in Perth, underwent rigorous fitness assessments this week, including a full-bore session at Allan Border Field under the watchful eye of bowling coach Daniel Vettori. His return bolsters an already potent Australian pace attack.
Cummins Confirms Hazlewood’s Readiness
“He’s had no hiccups,” Cummins stated. “The medical team is super confident. He bowled well yesterday and earlier in Adelaide, and we’re thrilled to have him back.”
Boland’s Omission: Tough Call
Scott Boland, who impressed with five crucial wickets in Adelaide and averages an outstanding 13.54 in home Tests, finds himself out of the XI but remains in the mix for the series’ remainder. Cummins acknowledged the difficulty of leaving Boland out, noting his exceptional form and commitment.
“It’s tough leaving him out,” Cummins admitted. “He was fantastic in Adelaide. There’s a fair bit of cricket left in the series, and I’d be surprised if he doesn’t get another opportunity.”
Hazlewood’s Road to Recovery
Hazlewood’s injury was described as a recurring issue rather than a typical side strain. Despite his frustration, the pacer expressed relief that the injury was managed early.
“It’s caused me a lot of trouble over the years,” Hazlewood revealed. “This time, we caught it early. Plenty of meetings have been held with Cricket Australia’s physios and doctors to find solutions to prevent it from happening again.”
Cummins echoed the importance of cautious management. “Joshy has pushed through injuries before, but we didn’t want to risk turning soreness into a long-term problem,” he said.
Can Smith Find Form?
As Australia aims to take a decisive lead in the series, Steve Smith’s form remains a talking point. With the Gabba known for its pace and bounce, the match presents an opportunity for Smith to rediscover his best.
Australia’s XI for the Gabba is now confirmed, setting the stage for a thrilling clash as India looks to level the series and Australia eyes another step toward domination on home soil.
